Lightwaves 2016: Opening Weekend Highlights

Read Time:2 Minute, 22 Second

With December on the horizon, Lightwaves is in its final stages of preparation before opening on the 9th December. There’s an action-packed opening weekend for you to enjoy, see below for details:

Honour Choir Performance – Friday 9th December, 19:00

To mark the launch of Lightwaves 2016, Honour Choir will be performing a number of songs at The Lowry Plaza. Made up of hundreds of singers from across Greater Manchester, Honour first performed in 2014 as part of Quays Culture’s Summer event of the same name.

Light Graffiti Workshop – Friday 9th December until Sunday 11th December, 12:00-14:30 and 16:30-19:30

Over the weekend, a shop unit in The Lowry Outlet Mall will be transformed into a creative hub where visitors can try their hand at creating their very own light graffiti with artist Sarah Wakeford. Expect lots of movement and shapes captured using time-lapse technology, resulting in an image which will be available to download and keep after the experience.

Baby Moves Sensory Workshop – Saturday 10th December, 15:30

As part of a developing partnership, we’re inviting Baby Moves along to join the fun on Saturday 10th December at 3:30pm, with a bespoke workshop in The Lowry Outlet Mall followed by a special tour of the artworks across MediaCityUK and Salford Quays. Interactivity plays a big part in the Lightwaves programme this year, with many of the artworks featuring elements which visitors can engage with to offer an encompassing sensory experience. We’re sure the babies will love it, as will you!

Places are limited to 15 and due to the nature of the workshop, your baby must be under 8 months of age. Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis, but a waiting list will be set up should places become available.

To book, simply email [email protected] with your name, your baby’s name and age and your address. For any enquiries, please call Quays Culture on 0161 876 2106.

Artist Talk with GNI Projects – Saturday 10th December, 14:00-15:00

Graham and Ingo of GNI Projects, the artists behind Heart Beat, will discuss their history and creative practice as well as answer your questions during this Saturday afternoon event. Taking place at the University of Salford’s MediaCityUK campus, it’s the perfect accompaniment to your Lightwaves visit (there’s even refreshments!) Tickets are available to buy for the small fee of £3 here.
