What Will It Be Like In The Cathedral of Mirrors?

Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

In just under two months, Lightwaves 2015 will be underway, lighting up the winter nights with giant digital light artworks and a programme of free workshops, performances and talks. You can find out all about it here on our event page.

While we’re excited by all of our visiting artists, the highlight of the programme will undoubtedly be the brand new Quays Culture commission from US-based Danish artist, Mads Christensen, whose Cathedral of Mirrors will see twelve 12 foot mirrored columns rise up on The Lowry Plaza between the 12 – 27 December. These motion-sensitive sculptures will respond to the crowds that gather around them, emitting more light energy the busier it gets.

We have a computer simulation and a working prototype of the artwork which you can watch on YouTube…but if you want a greater sense of the immersive quality of Mads’ beautiful artworks, why not try this hypnotic video for his sculpture Zoom, a {No Relation} project with Steven Christensen?

While Cathedral of Mirrors will be very different in execution, we’re confident the effects will be the same! This giant, walk in sculpture sits in silence, emitting an undulating glow that washes over the viewer in unpredictable ways, creating a space for quiet reflection and wonder.

In the words of its creators: “The project reflects upon the topic of scale, and the exuberant surface qualities one often observes in ordinary objects when magnified. The installation acts as a space multiplier, using form and light to produce an immersive and disorienting spatial experience at a scale seemingly larger than the project’s diminutive footprint.”

Lightwaves 2015 runs every day between 12 – 27 December from 4:30pm – 10:30pm (closed Christmas Day) and is completely free. You can follow the conversation on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #lightwaves15.
